People don’t enjoy visiting the dentist, but it is something that’s important for their overall health. But despite that fact, people still miss their dental appointments each year.

Oral health is not just a problem within the mouth. It also affects one’s personality, relationships, success, and self-confidence.

By not visiting the dentist, you are also risking your general health. There are several studies that connected poor oral hygiene to serious health issues that include heart diseases, premature births, strokes, diabetes, and other major health conditions.

Visiting the Dentist

According to a survey, more than half of adults in the UK visit their dentists regularly. This is an improvement over the numbers from 1978 when only 44 percent in England and 39 percent in Wales had regular dental visits.

Half of the adults said they visit the dentist every six months, while 21 percent said they do it once a year. Around a quarter of those who were surveyed said that they haven’t visited their dentist in the last two years. And two percent of the population have never stepped foot inside the office of a dentist.

In Europe, the UK ranked second when it comes to people who are likely to visit the dentist for a check-up. The first one being Netherlands.

Why People Don’t Go to the Dentist

There are several reasons why people don’t want to visit the dentist. One of the most common reasons is the cost. High prices have prevented people from having regular dental check-ups. There are people who don’t have dental insurance, and that’s why they don’t go to the dentist regularly.

Another reason is that they have fear of dentists. And more often than not, it started out when they were kids. The different tools that the dentist uses can bring lots of anxiety to the patients. That’s why dentists today try to make their office as relaxing as possible. Patients need to talk about their fears to the dentists so that they can make proper adjustments. Being open with the dentist is the first step to overcoming the fear.

There are some people who think that they don’t need a dentist to take care of their teeth. They feel that their teeth are fine, and an examination and cleaning are already unnecessary. However, dental health is more than just brushing and flossing. The dentist will check the whole mouth to look for indicators of tooth crowding, gum recession, eating disorders, cancer, saliva quantity, and other oral concerns.

Some people are too busy that they don’t have time to go to the dentist. But with the advancement of technology, dental procedures have become faster. All it takes is less than an hour for an exam and cleaning. And you only need to do it at least once a year.

Dental hygiene is important not just to the teeth but overall health as well. Regular visits to the dentist are something that everyone should do to keep your teeth white and prevent heart diseases.
